Avoiding Bed Bugs at College

Institutions of higher learning are places where thousands of young adults attend classes campus-wide, participate in diverse extracurricular and social activities, live and eat together, and all too often unknowingly encounter bedbugs in the process. Being aware of some high-risk issues, however, can help busy students avoid a bed bug infestation and the accompanying itchy bites, bumpy rashes, lost sleep and stress associated with these nocturnal pests. 1. Dorm or Apartment Mattresses College mattresses typically serve many occupants over many years. Inspect mattress seams and beneath corners initially and regularly for telltale tiny fecal spots, empty shell casings, shed skins or sticky white eggs. Note that most colleges do not allow students to bring their own mattress. While they often do advise a topper, that padding will not prevent bed bugs in an infested mattress from feeding on you and actually gives them more places to hide. Inspect mattresses and bedding...

Why Do Termites Eat Wood?

You would be right to say that termites have an advantage over most of the species in the insect world. They don't have to risk their lives by foraging for food. These critters eat wood and live in it. Wood Provides the Necessary Nourishment Termites consider wood to be a delicacy. Whether it's dry, damp or rotted, these critters won't hesitate to chew through a wooden structure to satisfy their appetite. Unlike humans and most insects, termites have a gut that's filled with protozoa. Protozoa are the organisms that give termites their wood-eating ability. They produce the right enzymes to facilitate the digestion process. As soon as the termites extract the cellulose that's inside the wood, these enzymes activate and convert the cellulose into sugars. Wood is Habitable and Accessible It's true that termites eat wood to survive, but they also eat it to create their galleries. They use their strong...

What Does Fumigation Entail?

A wide assortment of pests can take up residence inside your house. In addition to cockroaches and termites, bed bugs and fleas are among the most common household interlopers. Because these pests can nest virtually anywhere in your home, it may be difficult to locate and treat all the places that the insects could set up their nests. Ineffective, off-the-shelf pesticides often cause the pests to scatter throughout your house. Depending on the pest, an unchecked infestation can pose a health hazard as these insects spread germs. Getting rid of these pests permanently may require fumigation because the insects have become resistant to certain pesticides. It is the most effective way to eliminate small pests as well as those that can hide virtually anywhere in your house. What is Fumigation? Fumigation is the process of securely enclosing a house in a large tent or a series of tarps so that the...

Surprising facts about ants

When you see one ant in the home, it's almost a guarantee that you'll see more in line behind him. Most ants that invade homes are small and black. They usually don't bite, and they are often just looking for water or food. If you kill these ants with your fingers, they usually release a strong odor. This can be an attraction for more ants to come investigate what's happening to their family member. Ants might be small, but they are strong insects. They can often lift about 10 times their body weight. Some ants can lift about 50 times their body weight. The species of the ant plays a factor in the amount they can carry. When you think about breathing, you probably think about the lungs and other parts of the body that work together. Ants don't have lungs. There isn't room in an ant's body for lungs. They have...

Where You Can Find Mosquitoes

mosquito plMosquitoes thrive in San Diego and across Southern California. They're not only found up the Pacific Coast but also across the southern parts of the U.S. These insects infest most of the country, including the Northeast and the Midwest. Though their numbers fall off toward the Rockies, it's hard to escape from them no matter where you go. 3 Common Mosquito Areas in Your Yard Kids' Pools San Diego may have more tolerable temperatures than the rest of Southern California, but it still gets hot enough to fill up the kiddie pool. If it's full and the kids never use it, the water may become stagnant after a week or two. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, laying as many as 200 eggs at a time. If the kids aren't using it, always empty the kiddie pool to prevent a mosquito infestation. Flowerpots It's normal to leave flowerpots sitting outside,...
