Earwigs get their name from an urban legend whereby during the evening they prey on people’s brains by crawling in their ears. Obviously this isn’t true, but finding a large earwig infestation can be an unsettling discovery.
Earwigs can enter the house very easily. They can walk under the door or through open windows. There are several kinds of earwigs in this area which include the European, Common, Ring legged and Striped earwigs. The identifying traits are a pair of large pinchers or forcep-like appendages at the end of the abdomen. Summer months they come in great numbers. Earwigs are active at night and as a rule feed on dead animals and plant material. There are some species that are predatory.
The key to earwig control is disrupting migration of earwigs from outdoors to indoors because earwigs rarely establish colonies indoors. Earwigs are attracted to moist areas like the house foundation, mulch and bark areas around the home. They are mostly an outdoor nuisance pest so be careful. They will enter your home through loose or drafty doors.
